Drum Skimmers
Drum Skimmers are an Oil Skimmer type used to skim oil off the surface of the water by featuring rotating drums that are made of synthetic material (HDPE) or metal and to which oil adheres.
The oil is scraped off the suface of the drums by scrapers and, passing through the frame structure, is conveyed into the integrated recovery tank. From the integrated recovery tank the substances are then sucked in by a pump and sent to external storage tanks. This type of Oil Skimmers is suitable for use in mid-sized and large tanks as well as for offshore operations. Depending on the model, the devices can have an oil recovery rate from 1 m³ to 180 m³ per hour. The amount of entrained water is approx. 2%, thus making the use of additional oil water separators unnecessary.

Application
Drum Skimmers (Oil Skimmers) have been designed to control and remove oil spills from water. Due to their recovery rate from 1 m³ to 180 m³ per hour, they offer a range of applications going from the small pit in the industrial sector to large scale offshore operations when accidents with oil tankers or oil platforms occur.
Their special, sealed design allows them to be used even in rough waters. Wave breakers are available, as an accessory, for use in case of heavy swell and in the open sea; they can be fitted to the Drum Skimmer (Oil Skimmer). For use with temperatures near the freezing point, we offer a specially developed steam heating system to bring the Drum Skimmer and the nearby area up to temperature and to maintain these at temperature.
Drum Skimmers (Oil Skimmers) are particularly suitable for recovering supernatant oleaginous liquids from sumps and tanks without using solvents or other chemical products and, for this reason, they are also often used in the production area. Depending on the model, the devices can already be employed on water with a depth of 8 cm; they are unsinkable and their materials will not be damaged by salt water.

Drum Skimmers: design and operation
The base frame usually consists of anodized aluminium saving weight and offering a good long-term corrosion protection. For use with aggressive chemicals or at high temperatures, special models completely made of plastic or stainless steel are available.
The oleaginous products are recovered from the surface of the water by the rotating drums of the Drum Skimmer (Oil Skimmer). The self-adjusting scrapers remove the oily products from the drums of the Skimmer and, passing through the frame structure, they are conveyed into the integrated recovery tanks. From the integrated recovery tank the substances are then sucked in by a pump and sent to external storage tanks; for this purpose, already existing pumps can be used by means of adapters or, as an alternative to this, pumps matched to the recovery rates of the Drum Skimmer (Oil Skimmer).

The pump can either be mounted directly in the recovery tank of the Drum Skimmer (Oil Skimmer) or it is separately connected to the Drum Skimmer (Oil Skimmer) through a hose. The mounting of the pump on the Skimmer will be dependent on the operating conditions. For high head applications, the pump should preferably be mounted directly on the Skimmer.
Drum Skimmers (Oil Skimmers) can be delivered with pneumatic or hydraulic drive, in order to use already existing connections or compressors. The drives are installed in pairs on the models with several drums. If no compressed air or hydraulic connections are available at the place of installation, we also provide you with the right power pack, available with both diesel or electric drives. Our complete systems are, due to their power units, autonomous and can therefore be operated fully independently of other power sources.

The devices are distinguished by their light weight, high degree of effectiveness and efficiency in recovering supernatant oily liquids. These features are obtained using the Skimmer’s drums both as pollutant recovery elements and floating supports of the Drum Skimmer. Due to this design, the Drum Skimmer will always automatically have the ideal position on the surface of the water and does not need to be adjusted in a time consuming way. This also applies when the pump is directly mounted on the Skimmer and the recovery tank is full.
In the basic version, the drums of the Skimmers are made of HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) with high adhesion to the supernatant, oily products. Our Drum Skimmers are able to skim off both light and heavy oils and usually achieve a recovery efficiency of approx. 98% (water content 2%), thus making the use of an additional oil water separator unnecessary.
Drum Skimmers: product benefits
ATEX Certification of all SK models of the Skimmers
The motors and the pump of all SK models of the Skimmers are ATEX certified, i.e. they are approved for use in explosive hazardous areas. The pneumatic motor for the rotation of the drums is approved according to Atex Ex II2 GD 0 - 40 °C for the Zone 2** and the standard pump with double diaphragm is approved according to Atex Ex II2 Gdc 0 - 100 °C for the Zone 2.
On request, a pump for the Zone 1* can be delivered.
The Skimmers are also able to work in harsh conditions, for example at a pH range of 4 -13 and at a temperature up to 60 °C for a few hours and up to 80 °C for a few minutes.
*Zone 1 is an area in which a dangerous potentially explosive atmosphere caused by mixtures of air and combustible gases, vapours or mists is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally.
**Zone 2 is an area in which a dangerous potentially explosive atmosphere caused by mixtures of air and combustible gases, vapours or mists is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for a short period only.
