Particularly when flammable liquids are stored, the cabinet construction as regards its fire resistance and the use of self-closing doors shall be taken into account.
In Germany, a fire resistance of >90 minutes has established itself as a state of the art (cabinet type 90) to ensure sufficient escape time for the employees, but also to give firefighters and rescue teams enough time to get into the working areas before the hazardous substances stored in a safety cabinet may turn a fire into an uncontrollable one and/or pose an additional, major source of risk. Safety storage cabinets with a fire resistance of 30 or 60 minutes (type 30 or 60) can be used only with restrictions, cabinets of type 15 are not approved. If certain types of safety storage cabinets (<type 90) are permitted in your facility, this is dependent on the presence of fire compartments, fire protection systems like a plant fire brigade etc.
Each cabinet is equipped with a base sump tray to safely collect the required quantities of the stored substances.
The employer has to determine whether ex zones are to be defined in a hazard assessment.
Storage of Hazardous Materials in Conformity with the Law
Hazardous substances may only be stored in working areas if storage can be achieved in a way that is also safe for the employees, and the substances are stored in special facilities.
Principles which apply to storage also apply to this case, i.e., a time that is longer than 24 hours is considered as storage according to the German Hazardous Substances Ordinance and TRGS (Technical Rules for Hazardous Substances).
Quantities required in the workplace for performing an activity are not affected by these principles. It should, however, be noted that, in the framework of a risk assessment, the amount(s) of substances shall be defined.
Unused remaining quantities must be safely stored after work/shift. To avoid that all substances are brought back again into a central warehouse, hazardous materials storage cabinets/safety cabinets offer the ideal solution. Construction and features of such a cabinet depend on the general applicable storage rules (joint storage, ventilation etc.).
Operation of Safety Storage Cabinets
Safety cabinets must be operated in such a way as to ensure that air inlet and outlet system work constantly effective.
A rate of air exchange of at least 10 times per hour avoids the occurrence of hazardous explosive atmospheres inside the cabinet in normal operation. The extract ventilation fan has to dicharge to the outside atmophere at a suitable location of the building, and the exhaust system must close automatically in case of fire, in order to avoid the formation of a bridge transferring heat into the inside when a fire breaks out. The air inlet and outlet of our cabinets close at a max. temperature of 70°C (+/-10 °C).
The doors of our safety cabinets can remain open during operations ensuring safe and comfortable operation, loading and removal. A thermal mechanism automatically closes the doors at a max. room temperature of >50°C.
