Containment of floating oils and debris
The increasing freight transport by waterway and the growing use of motor-powered recreational vehicles on rivers and lakes pose a potential risk to humans and natural systems. A small amount of oil is sufficient to cause serious damage. Non-absorbent Oil Booms / floating Containment Booms of RAW prevent the floatable oils or debris and trash from spreading over the water surface and enable their removal with no negative effects on humans and the environment.
High Quality Demands
High demands are placed on the floating oil booms: A stable position in water under the action of current, wind and waves and a high tensile strength are fundamental requirements. They must be extremely durable, suitable for long-term use, it must be possible to deploy them in a fast way and to use them in a versatile manner.
The better the floating oil boom can conform to wave motion, the greater the efficiency of a passive oil boom. This shall be ensured through sufficient freedom of motion between the boom segments and through sufficiently high buoyancy reserve. At the same time, the boom shall feature enough stability and tear strength to resist water pressure and possible floating debris. When collecting trash and other floating debris, a high buoyancy reserve is required because this litter (e.g. pieces of wood) will accumulate in front of the boom and may cause the oil boom to sink. The right design
Depending on their type of use and field of application, the first step is to select the suitable design of the floating oil boom. Then the dimensions of the passive oil boom should be adapted to the local conditions. Here it is possible to choose among various types meeting a wide range of demands.
Floats and draft skirt stand in reciprocal relationship to one another to maintain the buoyancy reserve mentioned above.
Spectrum of Applications
The spectrum of applications ranges from the smallest horizontal oil boom with an overall height of 20 cm for use in shallow inland waters to contain minor spills through other different types for ports, harbours, docks and canals, for protection during tanker operations, when cargo is lost, or for similar applications, to containment booms for use in the open sea with an overall height of 2 metres for offshore applications under the roughest conditions, e.g. in case of tanker accidents.
